Press Release Introduction & Writing Tips

Press releases are very effective in announcing news to outside media and news world. Wikipedia says "A news release, press release or press statement is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something claimed as having news value".

Most press news releases are distributed by email, fax, editors at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations or through distribution news wire distribution services, where your news gets syndicated to thousands of news sites worldwide. Most people who specialize in web or internet marketing believe that releasing a press release would get them good backlinks which again greatly contribute to their ranking with search engines.

Why Press Releases?

Press releases are used mainly for

1. Announcement launch of New Event ( like inaugurations, parties, prize events)

2. Business News and Corporate events (announcement of new product, new company members, latest technologies)

3. Social and Government News (from social and public organisations)

Important Points to Remember

  • Write the news for journalists and media NOT as articles, stories or stories. Such posts will be rejected by most media.
  • Keep it short (no more than one page of max 350 words) with 2 paragraphs atmost in the body of release.
  • Dont use hype or promotional language.
  • Do not quote html or email in your release. DO NOT WRITE PRESS RELEASE IN UPPER CASE (title especially)
  • Do not use hype, exclamation mark (!) or short forms in your release.
  • Ask yourself - "Is the news worthy? Does it attract people to read your news?".

Parts of Press Release

Title or Headline - The main title of the news. Excellent headlines easily attract attention of media persons. Start like

<company> unveils New Business Solution...
<company> introduces new product....
<company> boosts
<company> announces

Date & Place - contains the release date and originating city of the press release. Example Miami,FL - 22 Aug 2006

Introduction - Highlight the the importance of the news in this paragraph. Usually contains three or four lines.

Body - further explanation, statistics, background, or other details relevant to the news. Give also some quotes from spokespersons.

Boilerplate - generally a short "about" section, providing independent background on the issuing company, organization, or individual.

Contact Information - name, phone number, email address, mailing address, or other contact information for the PR or other media relations contact person. Do not write email here.

Ending: ### indicates the end of press release, basically which refers to XXX meaning 30 used to denote end in telegraphic codes used in early years.
